California’s First City

Indulge in the deep-rooted history that Monterey has to offer. Originally California’s first capital, Monterey was the host of the state’s first Constitutional Convention where the original state constitution was signed in 1849.

Today, Monterey is most widely known as the fishing and sardine capital of the world. As John Steinbeck puts it in his 1958 novel Cannery Row, “a quality of light, a tone, a habit, a nostalgia, a dream."
